Meet Mambo Village


Solar panels
The main source for our electricity is the sun.
Every hour our guard is turning the solar panels in the direction of the sun to gain the maximum of energy.

Only for pumping the water and baking bread we need the generator for about one hour a day.

During periods of clouds and the rain season we have to charge the batteries with the generator.
Lucky wise there is a lot of sun!

LED lights
One of the secrets of using solar power is to reduce the needed amount of energy. For our lighting we use second and third generation LED lights. Those are easily to combine with local design like this lamp.

The lampshades are made by a women group who have a pottery.
The fittings are normal (European) fittings and the voltage is regular 230 Volts.
To reduce the use of electricity we placed sensors on all places where people easily forget to switch off the lights like in the toilets an bathrooms.

On the left you see a part of a LED tube light.
Our computers are netbooks. They have enough power to do the job
but consume far less energy.
Unfortunately a lot of old computers are donated to Africa but actually often worthless because the
re is not enough power. (Except from all the viruses because te narrow and expensive internet bandwidth)
Outdoor LED lights
Outside we use LED lights with their own solar panel and sensors. However it are not city lights it is enough for orientation and to see where you walk.
Solar fridges
Cooling and freezing happens with solar fridges. They run on 12 volts an use a very little energy only.
However the top covers
are not very handy it keeps the cold inside if you open the cover.
We set up a small windmill which is connected to the fridges. However there is not much wind it contributes to our cool beers and sodas
